:::: Frequently Asked Questions ::::
Web Hosting Answers : How do I transfer my domain to Webway and how much does it cost ? The easiest way to do this is to ask your existing domain registrar to change the nameservers for your domain to ours : Windows accounts : ns1.host102.com / ns2.host102.com Anyone then typing in your domain name will be directed to your site on our servers. However this leaves 'control' of your domain and billing with your previous registrar, if you would prefer to move full control of your domain ( including billing ) to us please contact us for instructions. We do not charge for domain transfers. How many e-mail accounts do I get with my account ? This depends on the hosting account you sign up for, please refer to the hosting plan specifications. Yes, both Linux Apache hosting and Windows 2000 accounts come with full support for Perl / CGI. However where possible you should use PHP scripting in preference to Perl / CGI - equivalent PHP scripts will run faster and more efficiently. On Windows 2000 hosting accounts will get access to more advanced scripting languages such as ASP, Perl / CGI, PHP, SSI and ODBC. How long will it take to set up my account ? Your hosting account will be set up the same day and we will contact you with the usernames / passwords and other details you need to administer your account. As your domain(s) will need to be registered or transferred it will be a day or two before you can use the account via the domain name. You can start using the account immediately setup is completed - via the IP address for a Windows account or a via temporary URL for a Linux Apache account. Do you have an acceptable use policy ? We do - it is included in our standard terms and conditions, basically we ban pornography, racist materials, illegal or unlicensed software and sending 'spam' from our servers - these policies are for your protection and ours and we will always enforce the terms and conditions immediately if we become aware of an infringement. Any FTP client should work with our servers, for customers new to FTP we recommend CuteFTP. Customers building their sites with Macromedia's Dreamweaver or Ultradev products should make use of the excellent built in FTP client as our accounts fully support the synchronisation features and this can save you a huge amount of time when working with your account. Do your hosting accounts support Frontpage Extensions ? Yes, all our packages support Frontpage extensions as a standard: Please note that you will not be able to publish your site with Frontpage using the temporary IP address, you need to wait till your domain name is registered/ transferred and propagated. I have a hosting account - do I have access to my log files ? All hosting accounts include comprehensive visitor statistics packages, however if you wish to download your logs to analyse locally or keep for future reference they are available for you to download via ftp or control panel. What software is running on the servers ? Windows servers run Windows 2000 server / IIS5 / ASP 3.0 with e-mail support provided by iMail 7. There is also an extensive range of third party components installed. Linux servers run Red Hat Linux / Apache / and PHP4 and Perl 5. Will others have access to my files ? By definition anything you place in you public web site directories folder will be available to people though your website - the exception to this are ASP / PHP / Perl (in CGI-BIN) scripts which, when called from a browser, will return the result of the script and not the script source itself. Any information that you do NOT want visitors to access should, in a Windows account, be placed in your 'Private' directory where it can still be referenced from the scripts in your site but not accessed directly via a URL. For Linux Apache hosting you are able to password protect directories from your control panel. Nobody but you will have FTP access to your files unless you give them the username and password. How much disk space do I get ? This depends on the account you sign up for. please refer to the hosting package specifications. For reference most web pages, including graphics, total around 50K ( Kilobytes ) which equates to you being able to store approximately 200 web pages per MB of web space. Please note, however, that all files uploaded to your account are included in your disk space allocation and that databases inputting information from visitors can quickly grow in size. This depends on the account you sign up for. Please refer to the hosting package specifications. Using an average of 50K ( Kilobytes ) per web page this equates to approximately 20,000 page views per month for our Entry Level account, 80,000 for our Personal account and 150,000 for our Virtual account. No, your account is strictly for your own use only. If you are a web design company looking to host a number of client sites please contact us to discuss a reseller plan that fits your requirements. Web Design / Development Answers : Why can't I just create my own website ? You can, many company web sites are home grown - however be prepared to spend a lot of time reading, learning and reprogramming. A web site is a little like an iceberg - the visitor sees the visible part but underlying this are a great many factors such as browser compatibility, graphic optimisation, search engine optimisation and much more. Unless you understand these factors the web site that looks great on your own PC could look totally different or even not work at all on a visitors PC. WebWay built my web site and it needs updating - what will this cost ? We have a set price of $30 per hour for web site updates - we will always give you a quote before carrying out work. If you have a website that needs very regular updates we can either negotiate a discounted regular maintenance plan or build the site around a database backend and admin pages that allow you to update the site yourself. We have hundreds of items in our product range can we include them all in our site ? For a large product catalogue we would build your site around a products database, this way the pages the visitor sees can be built 'on the fly' from information in the database depending on the criteria entered by the visitor. Can I accept credit cards on my web site ? Certainly, we can offer a number of different ways of managing this depending on the merchant facilities available to you, please contact us for more information so that we can give advice relevant to your particular circumstances. Yes ! This is one of our prime considerations when constructing web sites - typically page load times are 10-15 seconds and, where possible, under 10. WebWay built our web site - who owns the copyright ? WebWay retains the copyright whilst the site build is in progress, once full payment is received all rights are transferred to the site owner. How will people find our site ? As part of a site build we will work with you to produce a list of key words and phrases for the search engines. We will then optimise the pages for these keywords and phrases and submit your site to the search engines. Search engine positions can never be guaranteed but we have had exceptional success in the past - a number of our sites appear at the number one position in the search engines for their chosen key words/phrase. Where can I see examples of your work ? A number of our clients sites are featured on our Portfolio page. Can WebWay help us with the sites written content ? We can - we have a great deal of experience in writing copy for clients sites, we can reformat existing text or produce copy from scratch based on the information you supply. Only you can answer this question - however there are numerous functions a web site can perform including advertising, product support, on-line sales and customer contact. For many companies having a web site has saved them a great deal of money - rather than sending potential customers expensive printed literature and product catalogues they can now refer them to their web site. For a number of our clients, since their web site has been established, it has become their number one source of enquiries and new customers. Do I have to do anything on my computer(s) ? Your site is stored on our servers - the only changes you may need to make to your local PC(s) is to add the new e-mail accounts to your e-mail client. If needed we can provide instruction in adding the new accounts to your e-mail client software. I've seen in the news many reports of .com failures - do web sites really work ? Yes they do - the site you're reading now is proof of this. The recent rash of .com failures is down to flawed business plans and over hyping of the Web in the past few years to a level that could not be sustained. Whilst the 'headline' .coms drop like flies the normal company sites quietly carry on generating new clients and sales for their owners. General We have a number of different plans and options - you can pay when ordering securely via our web site by a credit card or choose to be invoiced. Regular payments such as monthly hosting are paid via standing order from your bank (UK residence only). How can I see statistics on my visitors ? All Webway hosted accounts include extensive graphical visitor statistics. For Windows 2000 based accounts this is provided by Webtrends, for Linux Apache based accounts you have both Analogue and Webalizer reports available Do we have to sign a contract ? We do not require clients to sign a contract, however by placing an order the client is deemed to have agreed to our terms and conditions which appear on all quotes and invoices and are also included in this site. How do I get more visitors to my site ? You need a two pronged attack - firstly you must promote your site, both online via the search engines and offline by promoting it on all literature and advertising. Secondly you must have content on the site which people want to see - the greatest looking site will not hold a visitors interest without some substance to the content. Can visitors access my site with or without the WWW. ? Yes, your site is available at http://yourdomain.com and http://www.yourdomain.com. |
